6/20/06 Thoughts on CS

Sure, inevitably, we as a society (United States) will be surpassed technology wise. Why ? Because we're lazy fuckers. We don't have the drive, ambition, dedication to do much of anything anymore. I see so many foreign students on campus that are in graduate school working on PHD's or Masters when an American student of comparable age and mental capacity is still an undergrad.
I say this over and over.... The next 20 years will be an exciting ride for the United States. I'm trying to keep the scope of this text just to technology related stuff but it's all related somehow. The countries that will supersede the US in the 21st century will be China, India, and possibly Brazil Why? So you want me to justify my claim, why ? I feel like this move is something that every true hearted American is starting to feel. We are losing a race and soon, very soon, in terms of global economy we WILL be passed up, dominated, whatever the fuck you wanna call it. I say within the next 20 years, some say more some say less. Nobody can predict the future but I think I'm pretty damn close and not a lot of people would disagree with me for having such a crappy outlook for my own country.
Let's narrow the scope of my rant down, way down, to CS curriculums. Computer ralated methodologies change on pretty much a daily basis. Most Universities are taking a neanderlithic approach to teaching CS/Software Engineering students. Sure, assembly is important to know, sure the history of computing is important, we definitely need to know who did what and what was invented/conceived at said point in time. But my point is curriculums are not at ALL being focused on the now. Why not have a few elective classes for .NET or some other emerging technology ? Bureaucracy, that's why... shit in academia takes so long to process by the time we do get a .NET, C#, PHP class those technologies will be stagnant. Getting a CS degree is almost useless. Simply says that you are "capable of learning" and have learned a bunch of useless crap (for the most part).
I can't wait to graduate and get on with my life, watch out fuckers my entrepreneurial spirit will take the world by storm.
